Masturbation Month: Tips for Penis-Owners

Because there is more to masturbation than your hand.

Happy Masturbation Month! Most men start masturbating at around ages 13-14. According to one survey, 60% of young men age 14 reported they had masturbated at least once. That number increases to 80% for 17-year-olds, and by the time they reach adulthood, between 89–94% of men in the U.S. report having masturbated at least once.

Healthy masturbation is all about discovering what makes you feel good in addition to a great way to bring pleasure, alleviate stress and sexual tension, and relax. And just like partnered sex, masturbation can benefit from some variety. Many male masturbation methods produce a wide range of different sensations and mind-blowing orgasms. Here’s a list of masturbation techniques, tips, and gadgets to help bring variety to your solo play.

Give Your Balls Some Love

Don’t ignore your balls. The most neglected part of the male anatomy? The balls!!! They are very sensitive and packed with nerve endings. Try rubbing them gently with one hand while the other maintains a stroke on your penis. Finger them, fondle them, rub them. So many men forget to involve the testicles during masturbation, but touching them simultaneously as the penis during masturbation can be very orgasmic.

Toy suggestion: cock rings help to maintain an erection and for extra stimulation, try a vibrating cock ring.

Try Different Strokes

Moving your hand in an up-and-down motion is a tried-and-true masturbation technique — for many people with a penis. Try something new by experimenting with different movements, such as long, twisting strokes from base to tip. You can palm and pull your penis head while masturbating with a full-hand grip. You could also add a bit of rubbing to the classic three-finger grip.

Play suggestion: try a warming lube with a different stroke to get an entirely new experience from start to finish.

Get the Prostate in on the Fun

Your prostate, aka the “male G-spot,” is the golden ticket to an intense, full-body experience. The prostate is a walnut-sized gland inside the anus (of penis-owners) that can feel great when stimulated. First, lube up and try using your fingers or a small butt plug by inserting it inside of the anal opening, gradually massaging the prostate. Increase the speed and motion as the pleasure begins to build until you’re ready to finish.

Toy suggestion: New to prostate play? Try one of our prostate stimulators to help ease you into it. Once comfortable, you can gradually increase the size and function of your prostate massager.

Welcome the Frenulum to the Party

The "frenulum" is the small tag of skin on the underside of the penis, between the foreskin and the shaft of the penis. The frenulum is often overlooked, but it happens to be extremely sensitive and can be incredibly powerful when stimulated.

Use your finger, thumb, or vibrator to stimulate the frenulum. The frenulum orgasm is very different from other penile orgasms because it takes time, patience, and focus on a small, sensitive area. Instead of firmly gripping and pumping the shaft for pleasure, hold your finger on the frenulum and move it around and around and around.

Toy suggestion: Use a mini vibe or a bullet to stimulate the frenulum while playing with other parts of your body for a dual intensity orgasm.

Edging is a Fan Favorite

Orgasm control, also known as “edging,” draws out the pleasure so that you can have a longer, more explosive experience. Try it out by stroking your penis right up until the edge of ejaculation, then stop completely. Then, slowly begin to masturbate again, increasing speed until you’re ready to finish, then pull back again. Repeat this process as much as you’d like or until you can take it no more.

Play suggestion: anything works for edging because it is all about the control you can keep while in the moment. To enhance edging even more, try limiting one or more senses through BDSM play by using restraints or blindfolds - or, if you’re feeling it, a ball gag.

Add in a Toy, or TWO

Consider adding a toy — or two! — during solo play, if you want to ramp up your orgasm. Several toys are available for people with penises that can add loads of fun to a solo session. Some of our favorites are:

Strokers

Strokers are sleeve-like toys that people with penises use to masturbate and/or enhance partnered play by stimulating the shaft, glans, and sometimes even the testicles. Strokers come in all different shapes, sizes, and materials. Some are soft; some are hard. Some cover the penis; others are open-ended. Some vibrate, suck, or thump, and some feel like a real vagina, bum, or mouth. Experiment with different strokers to find the right one (or ones!) for you.

Try a signature stroker or a powered stroker for greater intensity.

Prostate Stimulators

Prostate stimulators look like vibrators, except they boast a unique curve designed to stimulate the prostate anally. As a result, they help penis owners massage their prostate more effectively. In addition, the vibration coupled with unique designs stimulates the prostate, potentially causing more intense orgasms.

Try a vibrating anal toy to get the most out of prostate play.

Butt Plugs

Butt plugs are cone-shaped toys with flared bases inserted into the anus and can be removed easily because of the base. Butt plugs are the perfect sex products thoughtfully designed to make you feel aroused, playful, and dirty in all the right ways. They are generally favored by those who seek the feeling of fullness in their rectum, but anyone wishing to experiment with anal play can enjoy a plug. Plugs pack plenty of fun opportunities that you can savor even while on the go. Your booty can be an incredibly thrilling place to induce pleasure.

REMEMBER: if you put something in the anus, it must have a base because, unlike the vagina, the anus will suction it into the body, potentially getting lost or stuck. It is a common error people make and is an expensive and exhausting trip to the emergency room to get it removed.

Try anal trainers to start your plug journey.
